Earth's geometry, rhumb line, great circle navigation, and magnetism, Calculations on time (UTC, IST, LMT), fuel, and distance, radio instruments - VOR, DME, ADF, and Instrument Landing System (ILS), pneumatic, magnetic and gyro instruments, flight planning, mass & balance, performance of aeroplanes and much more.

The exam tests both theoretical understanding and practical interpretation of weather including topics like atmosphere, pressure & Winds, thermodynamics, clouds & Precipitation, aviation Hazards, weather Reports like METAR, TAF, SIGMET, and synoptic charts, and Indian Climatology.

The syllabus is based on international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and specific Indian laws. Key areas include The Aircraft Act (1934), Aircraft Rules (1937), and various Civil Aviation Requirements (CARs) issued by the DGCA, appropriate air traffic services practices and procedures, aerodrome lighting, pilot responsibilities, etc.

The Radio Telephony Restricted (Aeronautical) License (RTR-A) is a mandatory certification in India, issued by the WPC Wing/DoT for pilots and controllers to operate radio equipment. It covers RT regulations, procedures, and aeronautical communication. The exam includes a written (Part I) and oral (Part II) test.

Written papers, a viva (oral exam) is conducted by a DGCA examiner to assess practical knowledge, with a minimum passing score of 7/10. DGCA ATPL exams are mandatory for obtaining the Airline Transport Pilot License in India, serving as the highest qualification for pilots to command commercial aircraft. Passing them is essential for career advancement, allowing pilots to move from First Officer to Captain.

Mandatory for multi-crew, turbojet, or aircraft over 5,700 kg (12,500 lbs).
